Helping disabled
people to lead a self-sufficient life with a decent
paid job and creating a positive attitude of the society
towards them has been the object of a small experimental
vocational training project which Saigon Children’s
Charity began in 2004.
Special Employment for the Deaf is a co-operative programme
between SCC and Ching Luh, a shoe factory in Long An
Province producing shoes for Nike. In 2004, Ching Luh
worked with Saigon Children’s Charity to help
five deaf youths get paid employment. After one month’s
training, they were able to work independently and signed
labour contracts. Working for Ching Luh, these workers
receive the same benefits and equal treatment as others.
To review this project,
on 14 February, we came to Ching Luh and spoke to our
disabled workers.

Viet Phong Luu (left), 25 years old, is deaf. He was
very happy to tell us that his salary is higher than
his father’s salary (who is now a teacher) and
Luu is proud to be making such an important contribution
to his family life.
