On 29th and 30th of October 2014, SCC and Vietnam Green Generation organised a programme called “Being a Green Knight for the Environment” at these primary schools: Tan Hoa B (Tieu Can District, Tra Vinh Province), Bung Tau (Phung Hiep District, Hau Giang Province), and Luong Tam 1 (Long My District, Hau Giang Province). The event was part of Learning Environments Programme which aims to educate and develop for students an active habit in terms of protecting their living environment in Mekong Delta.

Stage preparation at Tan Hoa B

Students were very excited with all warm-up activities

There were many activities in the event: putting on a play; watching videos about environment; exchanging inorganic wastes for stationeries (backpacks, pens, notebooks, mini blackboards, and crayons); learning and practising sorting of different types of rubbish, recycling paper, plastic items and other wastes; finally, competing on environmental quizzes.

The students paid pretty much attention to the play named “The dirty fly”

The students experienced 6 different stops at the event with 6 lovely names: Waste Exchange Station for stationeries; Green Knight love to learn; Green Knight love to recycle simple paper wastes; Green Knight love to recycle complicating paper wastes; Green Knight love to recycle other wastes (plastic items, cloths and other wastes); Smart Green Knight. After finishing the 6 stops, students would have some knowledge to protect their living environment through inspiring information and practising on how to recycle different types of wastes.

Students were practising to turn wasting papers and plastic bottles into mini notebooks and pen holders

…and they were so in love with making new paper sheets with wasting paper

Students learned on how to sort organic and inorganic wastes out

This time, the program reached to about 400 students in 3 schools. Nguyen Hoang Hung- SCC Programme Officer shared his thoughts: “Perception is what we need time to build up. Thus, we would like to focus on organising many similar events for a few years at an area. With any perception build-up, we do not evaluate the effectiveness of the project through short-term outcomes. Therefore, we need to repeat the programmes many times, in order to gradually build their perception on protecting the environment, as our ancients advised: “Constant dripping wears away stone”

Through pictures and videos, environmental knowledge was easier to get to the students’ memories
