Partnering with Saigon Children’s Charity (SCC) since 2006, Credit Suisse has supported SCC with numerous projects. From scholarships and exhibitions to school building and learning environments right here in Vietnam.
Over 3 days (from 14th to 16th of August), Credit Suisse staff members enjoyed their time on an SCC Challenge Day that we had put together for them at Hieu Trung B primary school in Tieu Can Ward, Tra Vinh Province. The school had recently been built with 3 new classrooms and 1 playground through donations from staff at Credit Suisse and also supported by funds raised by the 2013 Charity Cycle Adventure riders.
The southern provinces are in the middle of their rainy season; however the weather for the three days was quite comfortable, which helped the 38 Credit Suisse volunteers complete their job for the school opening ceremony the next day. This was their 5th volunteering trip over the past 5 years with us in Vietnam. In addition to many familiar faces, there were new ones who also joined this time to participate in the community activities and had the passion to help Vietnamese children, starting from these small but important activities.
They split into 5 groups: 1 group cleaned the classrooms, furniture and equipment; 3 groups painted walls of both the new and the old classrooms and 1 group painted outdoor games on the playground. All CS volunteers were equipped with hats, gloves, masks and other work-related tools.
The atmosphere became more fun and exciting when some students living around the school came and helped them with some of the simpler tasks such as cleaning tables and chairs, the floors, and sweeping. Everybody worked very hard and did not mind either the heat or dust!
On the following day, they attended the inauguration of the 3 new classrooms. During the trip, every team member had been trying to learn the song “Lớp chúng ta kết đoàn” (temporarily translated as “Our class as one”). They did the performance as a present to all the students at the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, everybody came to each class to give gifts to the students, to sing along and to take photographs with the students as well.
Three days of volunteering in Tra Vinh left all the members of Credit Suisse with a lot of emotions. They had a chance to see for themselves the lovely learning environment that they had helped to build and decorate for the children, they talked to many of them and played with them too. Those will remain as beautiful and lasting memories for all the team members. Moreover, the trip was an opportunity for all members to experience the positive changes they had bought to the school as well as the children in difficult circumstances whose school life will be that much more happy as a result of what they have all done together.
