In the last 2 months of 2017, Ms. Hanh Quyen – Special Needs Education Program (SNEP) Officer of saigonchildren and Ms. Kim Ngoc – Dean of the Faculty of Special Education Department National College of Education (NCE) visited 5 locations of trainees for the first training course of the project “Early Intervention for Children with Autism – The Advanced Training Course for Teachers”

The Project, organized by saigonchildren and HCMC NCE, preparation was made in 2016 and the first training was started in August 2017 with positive results. With the objective to improve the quality of early intervention for children with autism in special schools, the Project allows children with autism to have access to appropriate education, develop their full potential and have the opportunity to integrate into society.

In this visit to 5 centers for special education, including: Hoang Duc Center, Binh Tan Special Education School, Hy Vong – Go Vap Special Education School, City Children’s Hospital and Binh Minh Special Education School, Ms. Quyen from saigonchildren and Ms. Ngoc from NCE evaluated the quality of skills applied to teach children with autism and listened to teachers sharing their experience concerning difficulties and the desire of teachers to enhance the effectiveness of the project. All teachers observed a positive impact on children when they applied techniques including: Attention training, intensive interaction, play skills, language, sensory regulation techniques, listening skills, parent consultation, PECS stage 1,2,3, TEACCH and interaction skill development techniques.

Additionally, children are excited about the new teaching techniques. They now have access to visual schedules, encouraged to remember and be active in the lessons, and they are given choices of toys and activities they want participate in. In addition, parents are listened to and trained how to work with their children, so they are more confident and involved in their children’s education instead of totally relying on the teachers

One of the main factors contributing to the success of the project is the saigonchildren officers monitoring the schedules and evaluating the effectiveness of the project on all involved, especially teachers, parents and children with autism. In the following stages, the Project will deliver more positive influence to children with more techniques applied appropriately. At the same time the child’s abilities are continuously evaluated and the intervention plan is adjusted accordingly to help children with autism reach their full potential and integrate them into the community.
