On 27 September 2018, the signing ceremony to kick off the project of “Providing Training on Living Values and Life Skills for Young People with Visual Impairment” has taken place at Thiên Ân Shelter with the participation of approximately 20 children at the shelter, 16 staff from IBID together with saigonchildren team.

Thiên Ân Shelter (MATA), a social support center for visually impaired youth, was established in 1992 with the purpose of helping visually impaired children in disadvantaged areas gain access to education, essential skills to live independently, and the ability to integrate within the bigger society.

The expected project timeline is from October 2018 to May 2019. Thirty children and young people aged from 10 to 25 with visual impairment at Thiên An shelter will receive interesting and participatory life skills training sessions on topics such as Communication skill, Effective Learning Methods, Management of Negative Emotions, Reproductive Health Education, Safe Sex Education and just to name a few.

The children from the shelter performed the singings beautifully for the welcoming opening.

According to the prior research, children and young people with visual impairment are very mostly at risk because they are more vulnerable in most daily life activities. Without adequate visual information, the development of self-concept is hindered and they tend to face many challenges to effective social interactions. Those training sessions are considered very essential to provide them with knowledge and skills to help them improve the quality of life.

After signing the agreement, everyone spent some quality time to get to know the children at the shelter and gained more insights on how people with visual impairment live their lives, what their surroundings mean to them and learn to communicate with them better.

Mr. Damien Roberts- the Executive Director of saigonchildren, Ms. Huyen Le- CEO of IBID and Mr. Nguyen Quoc Phong- the founder of Thiên Ân shelter signed the agreement.
