Since I was a child, I have lived on the street. I have no education like my friends who are my age. Day by day life goes by, and I live in this difficulty. When I got older, I started to look for a job to earn money, like as a security guard or hard jobs in construction. One of the main issues that I face is that I do not have any identification papers, so I always have to depend on my friends to help me get jobs to get by.
With unstable jobs and no identification, there were times when I felt so lost and life would lose its meaning to me. Truthfully, I do not know how my future will go. I tried to ask my relatives to help me get identification documents, but the cost was too high for me to afford, so I had to give up. Life continued in the slums in District 8. When I was unemployed, just laying at home, my mom kept complaining, so I planned to leave home.
One day, the restaurant where I worked as the security guard closed, and I was unsure where to find another job. My friend told me to register in the “air conditioner mechanic” course at saigonchildren. I was accepted to that vocational course and introduced to a new job, while being sponsored with a small allowance to complete the course. Further, I have had opportunities to join many social activities, life skills trainings and meet new friends. It feels like a present sent by God to have many attentive and supportive friends that understand my struggles.
However, there are new challenges I must now face. As my job requires a lot of traveling, I feel tired when I come to class at night. Additionally, I have completed less schooling than my classmates, so I know that I need to put in more effort and take more time to study new things.
Although there are many difficulties, my teacher, Mr. Thai, and my classmates always help me review the lesson; Ms. Thuy of saigonchildren supports me a lot, and encourages me to complete the course. After the course, she worked hard to help me apply for jobs. It was especially difficult due to my lack of identification papers. After all the hard work, I have finally found a job with Song Nguyen company. My current job is good for me as it is stable, and I can earn 6 mil VND/ month. I will try my best to work hard and to save money to finally receive identification papers
