The story of Tien Tam

“Since I was a child, I have lived on the street. I have no education like my friends who are the same age as me. Day by day life goes by, and I live in this difficulty. When I got older, I started to look for a job to earn money, like as a security guard or hard jobs in construction. One of the main problems I face is that I don’t have any identification papers so I always have to depend on friends to help me find jobs to get by.

With unstable jobs and no identification papers, there were times when I felt so lost that life would lose its meaning to me. Truthfully, I do not know how my future will work out. I’ve asked my relatives to help me get identification documents but the costs are too high, so I had to give up. Life continued in the slums of District 8. When I was unemployed, just lying in bed at home, my mom kept complaining, so I planned to leave home.

One day, the restaurant where I was working as a security guard closed and I was unsure where to find another job. My friend told me to register in saigonchildren’s air conditioner mechanic course. I was accepted on to the vocational course and introduced to a new job, while being sponsored with a small allowance until I finished the course. Further, I have had opportunities to join many social activities, get life skills training and meet new friends. It feels like a present sent by God to have so many attentive and supportive friends who understand my struggles.

However, there are fresh challenges I must now face. As my job requires a lot of traveling, I feel tired when I come to class at night. Additionally, I have completed less schooling than my classmates so I know that I need to put in more effort and take more time to study new things.

Although there are many difficulties, my teacher, Mr Thai, and my classmates always help me review lessons. Furthermore, Ms Thuy of saigonchildren supports me a lot and has encouraged me to complete the course. She’s also worked hard to help me apply for jobs, which has been difficult due to my lack of identification papers. However, after all the hard work, I have finally found a job with the Song Nguyen company. My current job is good for me as it’s stable and I can earn 6m vnd a month. So I’m now trying my best to work hard and to save money to finally receive my identification papers.
