“I was able to grow as a teacher, and better serve my students”.
Khả Lâm is a 5 years old child with autism, son of a single mom. Differ from other child, he has hardly said any words in his first 2 years, even call “mommy”. His mom, a full-time actress in a small province, has spent all her money and spare time to look for help from doctors in Ho Chi Minh City, where is 10 hours away from their hometown by car. Lâm was asked to stay in HCM Children’s Hospital for long-term treatment, which is unaffordable and impossible for a single mom.
Luckily, she has found the Center of Rehabilitation and Education for Disable Children in her hometown and Mr. Thanh – his personal teacher for the last 3 years. Young mom has persevered with Lâm’s treatment for a year. She remembered one moment she busted into tears with his first call “mommy”.
Next year, Lâm will be in first grade like a normal kid which seemed to be a dream for his mom 3 years ago. There’s still a long journey ahead with Lâm, his mom, and Mr. Thanh – his conscientious teacher, but let’s hope for a continuous miracle led by love and persistence.
“My name is Tong Tran Thien Thanh and I work at the Center for Rehabilitation and Education for Disabled Children in Khanh Hoa Province. Two years ago, I met a boy named Kha Lam. Initially, Lam did not speak or respond to his name.
In 2016, I participated in a training session on early intervention for children with autism at the Khanh Hoa Center. This was a project sponsored by Saigonchildren through its Special Needs Education programme. In this session, experts taught us early intervention techniques, including how to guide parents during therapy. After this training, I applied my knowledge to sessions with Lam and his mother.
Today, Lam is able to converse and ask questions. I would like to thank Mr. Dominik, Saigonchildren, and LHA for paying attention to Kha Lam. With their help, I was able to grow as a teacher and better serve my students.
Teacher of Lam,
