Story of Diem

date_range2018-09-18

Over the period of nearly 26 years of operation, saigonchildren has managed to help thousands of disadvantaged students to continue their education. Many of them receive scholarships from elementary school until graduation. Not only scholarships, the children also receive guidance and good care as family members from saigonchildren’s social worker staff.  Điểm is one of those students. She received scholarships from saigonchildren for 14 years since elementary school. In addition to the support for school tuition, she also received school supplies, fabrics to make school uniform and bicycle to help her get to school faster and safer. This support helped reduce her family’s expenses significantly and motivated herself to excel at school and in life in general.

Unfortunately, a tragic happened to her family when she was the last year student at University. Life fell apart when her beloved brother was diagnosed with brain tumor and passed away within few months. At that time, she was preparing for University graduation exam, and all she could think of was to give up on everything. She was mourning the sudden loss of someone close to her and it left her completely lost. However, she realized she was not the only person losing her loving brother. Her parents, those having more and more gray hair and dark circle under the eyes, also lost their young son. She swept her tears away, pulled herself together to get over her own grief and became strong for the sake of her parents. She told herself she was the only child they had left with and she could not allow herself to disappoint her parents and those from saigonchildren who had been there to support her through thick and thin.

There is a rainbow of hope at the end of every storm. Life does not always go as planned, but how you adapt define you. Điểm managed to graduated University on time and now has a job that she enjoys working. Her strong will got her overcome all the obstacles.

She wrote in a recent letter to saigonchildren “Now looking back, it was a wonderful journey with saigonchildren program team for the last 14 years. I’m grateful to have saigonchildren as my second family. I have grown up so much as a person, both professionally and personally.

Saigonchildren is very touched by Điểm life story and is also very proud to see her grow up into a person with a strong mind and goals in life. Sponsoring a child in need is the best investment one can do. There are still many stories to help, and you can always join hands with us to remove barriers to education.
