Out-of-class experience with auto mechanic trainees

From July 2022, 25 young adults have been awarded vocational training scholarships sponsored by Motul Vietnam. These trainees come from low-income families, including those residing in ethnic minorities, and are studying automotive mechanics. They have been selected from colleges and technical schools across Ho Chi Minh City.

All trainees receive one-to-one support and assistance in identifying the appropriate training and the right course aligned with their future careers. Each scholarship covers the full training costs, learning materials, psycho-social counselling when needed, life skills training and social activities organised by Thang Long School.

At the end of last year, these 25 learners had the first in-person meeting with Motul Vietnam’s Board of Management and garage owners at Thang Long School. It was an opportunity for them to discuss their curiosity related to the job field and career prospects, enabling them to be more proactive and well-prepared before starting anew.

They asked thorough and specific questions about working hours, job requirements, benefits, and incentives, as well as the knowledge and skills they would gain during the training. Trương Minh Định, the owner of Nam Ô Tô garage, emphasised, “The first thing we have to remember when pursuing this profession is honesty, diligence, and a willingness to learn from our predecessors. These words serve as a reminder that the most important thing for students to develop themselves is to learn.”

In April 2023, the 25 scholarship recipients had the chance to visit the Motul factory in Nhà Bè District for the first time. There, they witnessed working environments and the process of manufacturing synthetic engine oil used in auto accessories and machine production, guided by the technical staff. Additionally, a small workshop was held after the tour, where participants engaged in quiz games to gain better understanding of the company and its products, a topic familiar to those studying car repair. The gathering also included presentations from senior managers and the Board of Directors of Motul Vietnam.

In recent years, the quantity of public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City has been unable to meet the demands of all secondary students who are ready to take the higher-level exam. As a result, some students continue their schooling in private educational institutes, whilst others consider labour work to contribute to the household income, as the cost of vocational training remains a financial constraint for their parents. Therefore, scholarships like these would mean a lot to these young individuals, exempting them from hindering their pursuit of education and empowering them to overcome challenges faced by them and their families.

Nguyễn Công Danh, a student of Bách Nghệ Vocational school, shared, “The scholarship is extremely practical and vital for myself and my family as it helps ease our current difficult economic circumstances. Actually, I could not afford my tuition fees in the previous school year. This support not only helps me pay off the remaining debt for school, and other substantial fees (insurance, exam preparation, etc.) but it also relieves my stress and serves as a huge motivation for me to strive for my education.”
