The trip to Phụng Hiệp District, Hậu Giang Province last September facilitated an encounter between saigonchildren and Ân – a student who has just completed her first two academic years at Phương Ninh School.
Ân lived with her parents and a younger sister in a small house within the school campus for many years, starting when she was a little kid. It can be said that she is one of the most reliable witnesses to the deterioration of her school over the years.
During the interview with saigonchildren, Ân shared the challenges she and other students have faced while studying under the dilapidated roof. She voiced her dislike for the cracked flooring tiles, peeling paint, faded walls, and the sound of rain leaking which disrupted their lessons. Moreover, the main reason her family decided to move out and relocate to an area near the campus was due to the recurring issue of rainwater overflowing into their house.
Last week, during the commencement of the construction of new classrooms and the renovation of the playground, we met Ân once again. She shared her good academic achievement from the previous school year and expressed her anticipation for the school’s refreshed appearance. She wished the new classrooms will have pink walls, modern furniture, be clean and spacious, and most importantly, the rainwater will no longer leak through the roof into the classrooms.
In just a few months, Ân’s daily scholling will be filled with much more joy and elation. The stimulating learning environment will positively impact her engagement and focus, and she will be able to hang out with friends without the fear of the slippery playground.
