Kim Yen’s Story: “Your words of encouragement are what drive me forward”

Kim Yến’s upbringing paints a picture of resilience in adversity. Born into a humble family, her father worked as a motorbike taxi driver while her mother sewed clothes by the roadside. Growing up in such circumstances, Kim Yến faced numerous challenges and a lack of clear direction due to the family’s tight financial situation.

Yến faced self-doubt and uncertainty during her adolescence, compounded by limited educational opportunities. Financial pressure forced her to drop out of school after finishing Year 9.

After a local official introduced Yến to saigonchildren, fate changed. Yen’s life changed after this encounter. At saigonchildren, she not only received financial support to pursue vocational training but also gained invaluable soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and customer service.

At first, Yến was shy and quiet, Yến’s transformation within the vocational training program was remarkable. Over time, she adapted and embraced challenges. The encouragement and support she received allowed her to step out of her comfort zone and discover her capabilities.

Reflecting on her journey, Yen shared,

“During those learning hours, I was provided with opportunities to express my opinions, engage in discussions, and practice soft skills. It was through these experiences that I gradually overcame my self-doubt and emerged more self-assured.”

Empowered by the encouragement and support from saigonchildren, Yến’s not only acquired vocational skills but also nurtured her passion for cooking. Her culinary journey began humbly, experimenting with meals for her family despite limited resources. Encouraging feedback from her parents served as a significant source of motivation, propelling Yến to pursue her culinary aspirations further.

Today, Yến has completed her culinary training in Asian cusine and embarked on her career at Kowloon restaurant, where she can showcase her culinary prowess and contribute to her family’s welfare.

Yen’s story embodies the transformative power of support and encouragement from the community. She remains hopeful that organisations like saigonchildren will continue to receive generous support from compassionate individuals, enabling them to uplift more lives within the community.

Saigonchildren’s PowHERful campaign was created to support girls like Yen, to give them the opportunities and access they need to thrive and develop to their full potential.
