“Traffic light” of mental health

date_range2025-12-08

Mental health was the key focus of our recent training workshops for scholarship recipients in Đồng Tháp Province at the end of November 2025, as part of the support saigonchildren provides to them.

For many students, mental health is still a relatively new concept. Some have a basic understanding but need further guidance to explore it properly and enhance their well-being effectively. With this in mind, the trainers, who are specialists in psychology, worked together with saigonchildren to design a child-friendly and approachable session outline.

During the workshop, students gained valuable insights on:

  • the importance of mental health;
  • common psychological challenges;
  • good and bad habits affecting themselves;
  • simple practices for daily self-care.

A particularly memorable method was the use of traffic light colours to help students remember key concepts. The yellow light represents a “notice zone,” helping students recognise changes in daily habits, physical wellbeing, studies, emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. If one of these signs lasts more than two weeks, or if students experience more than three signs, they are encouraged to pay timely attention and make adjustments. Otherwise, these signs may gradually shift into the red light, indicating their condition has worsened.

At the end of the sessions, each participant received a pocket-sized brochure containing checklists on how to protect and enrich mental health daily, serving as a reminder to care for their wellbeing. Most importantly, students were reassured that they are not alone on their journey, as saigonchildren will continue to accompany, support, and attentively care for them whenever needed.

Training workshops are a crucial part of saigonchildren’s scholarship package, aiming to support students’ holistic development in addition to their academic learning. Topics are designed flexibly and regularly updated to meet the practical needs of students, as well as those of their community and society.
