The Classrooms Renovation project at Hy Vong School improves the learning experience for children with hearing impairment

date_range2019-08-15

Hy Vong Binh Thanh School for Children with Hearing Impairment was built in 1986 and was the first special school for children with hearing impairment in Ho Chi Minh city. It is a non-profit private school which is free for disadvantaged children and orphans. Saigonchildren supports this school as part of the Special Needs Education Programme.

In 2011, saigonchildren first made their contribution to the school by providing a TV for a classroom and piloting electronic lesson plans as part of the project “Electronic Lesson Plans for Children with Hearing Loss”. The project was successful in the use of visuals to help students understand the lessons more easily and effectively. The school continues to teach using electronic lesson plans and applies this to all classes in the school. After 8 years, the TV that saigonchildren provided had stopped working. To maintain the teaching and learning quality, the school needed help to replace the broken TV.

The school was built in 1986 and renovated in 1995. The floor was lower than both the road and the drainage system, which caused humidity and unpleasant odors which had a negative effect on the children’s learning environment. As a non-profit school, it was impossible for Hy Vong School to renovate the classrooms without support. In addition to that, the students’ parents have a low income, so they were not able to contribute to the renovation of the school’s facilities. Raising the classrooms’ floors gave children a more comfortable and child friendly learning environment. For those reasons, the project Classrooms Renovation for Hy Vong School for Children with Hearing Impairment was conducted.

This project aimed to improve the learning environment for 130 students with hearing impairment at Hy Vong Binh Thanh school by installing a new television, raising the floor in four classrooms and tiling the walls.

Before After

A television was purchased and installed in a classroom to enable the children with hearing impairment to learn visually. This television is very helpful in teaching art and other subjects which need visuals to show students objects and natural phenomena. Four classrooms were renovated with the floors raised and tiles put on the walls. The classrooms are now renovated, so the students can study and nap on the floor without enduring the discomfort of the damp floor. The students are proud of the newly renovated classrooms and are eager keep them clean and tidy.

There were many favourable conditions that led to the success of the project. The renovation was done in the summertime and was completed on schedule by August 2019, so it did not interfere with the students’ learning. The classrooms were ready for the new school year. The school worked in harmony with saigonchildren to implement all stages of the project.

This project has greatly benefited the students with hearing impairment by providing them with a shiny clean new learning environment with modern teaching equipment to facilitate visual learning. This project not only improved the school facilities, but more importantly was able to bring joy and pride to the students which enhanced their wellbeing and self-esteem. As a result, they are motivated to learn and become more confident about integrating into the community.
