Corporate Social Responsibility is not only about funding

Partnering with Saigon Children’s Charity (Saigonchildren) since 2008, Credit Suisse has supported saigonchildren with numerous projects aimed towards improving education facilities for children in the most difficult areas in Vietnam. Beside raising a large amount of funding, they are one of the pioneers to coordinate intensive CSR trips for their staff members every year in the last 10 years.

Over the space of three days (22nd – 24th August), Credit Suisse staff members from Singapore and Hong Kong took part in their annual Saigonchildren Challenge Day activities, at the Thanh Hoa 2 Primary School in Phung Hiep, Hau Giang province. The field trip took place in the middle of the construction progress.

Before this project, Thanh Hoa 2 Primary School was in serious need of rebuilding. Much of its infrastructure was damaged and decayed. On days of heavy rain, the floors became slippery and dangerous. The numbers of toilets and sinks did not meet the minimum needs of children and teachers. Ultimately, the school couldn’t provide a safe learning environment, having a negative impact on the students’ learning capabilities, especially in extreme weather conditions.

Credit Suisse staff members participated in the construction site to put the finishing touches in the second phase of the building. This included working on the classrooms’ floors, by navigating the frame of the floors, as well as pouring cement into moulds in the ground. Groups of volunteers fixed the iron frames in the classrooms while others mixed the cement to pour into the concrete floor. The window frames have also been painted to get ready for the third phase.

The completion of Thanh Hoa 2 Primary School makes it the 11th school to be sponsored and rebuilt by Credit Suisse since 2008. Over the past 11 years, five kindergartens and six primary schools in remote and poor areas of Vietnam have received Credit Suisse’s funds for reconstructing and enhancing schools to meet the standards of Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training. Their support has changed the lives of many underprivileged children in Vietnam.
