Trí Dũng – The boy who’s “graduated” from early intervention

date_range2021-04-27

Tri Dung has been enrolled in saigonchildren’s free early intervention program since 2019. During our interview with Ms. Trang, Tri Dung’s mom, she shares that throughout Dung’s 3-year journey with saigonchildren, there have been noticeable improvements. Before, he lacked concentration, did not respond when he was called, and had difficulties with fine movements, now, Dung is able to follow the 1st Grade intensive program without the need for extra tutoring.

“For me, Dung being able to enroll into 1st Grade is a momentous achievement. Dung loves to make friends with new students from different classes; so much so, his closest friends are actually not from other classes and not his own”, Trang shares.

Additionally, he is very caring towards his teachers and family. At school, when Dung’s teacher bumped into the edge of the table, whilst other students continued to play, Dung checked on the teacher and asked if she was in pain. At home, every night Dung would check up on his grandma because he knows she has back pain.

Along with Dung’s personal determination, there are also the efforts of the family. Trang shares: “I usually join the early intervention classes with him to find out more about different methods to play with my child that are appropriate and will support my child to continue developing at home. Moreover, Dung also receives a lot of care and love from his grandparents, parents, and siblings”.

Currently, Tri Dung still experiences some difficulties, like with writing or math, as he has difficulties with fine movements. However, with patience and support, Dung can complete all his homework well. Additionally, Dung still cannot communicate a complete sentence, or express his thoughts clearly, causing a little hindrance to his learning to write. Although he still faces many challenges when learning, Tri Dung is improving day by day – even achieving good academic achievements in school.

“I hope in the future, after a day at school or anywhere, he can come home, sit down by my side, and describe his day to me clearly, what he did, was it fun or sad, etc…” Trang shares

Like Tri Dung, every child with autism can develop to their full potential if they have the opportunity for early intervention.
