“Because going to school is the only way for me to save myself”

date_range2022-11-29

Meet Thân – A long-time beneficiary of the Saigon Children’s Scholarship Programme from age 8, he has just graduated from high school and passed the entrance exam to tertiary education majoring in Information Technology.

He is the youngest child in a family of 6 children, with 5 sisters and him, in Cần Giờ District, Ho Chi Minh City. Thân’s father passed away when he was 6, and his mother also left the family not long after that. The absence of parents from a young age would prove difficult for any young person. However, through the support of his elder sisters who stepped into their parents’ roles meant that Thân and his other siblings would still have access to necessities like food and education.

Despite Thân’s own barriers to education, he has always placed the needs of others before his own. Since the beginning of his time with the programme he has offered his spot and opportunities that came with the scholarship to others in need. In near reach of fulfilling his dream of studying vocational training in Information Technology he still is willing to forego the post high-school scholarship to others who are in need. The programme acknowledges his generosity but will continue to support him with the tertiary scholarship and hopefully fulfil his hopes of financially supporting his sisters and their families.

Thân’s story highlights that resilience can help to overcome any challenge and with support like the scholarship, dreams can come true.

Let’s listen to his story and hear more about his positive attitude to education.
