In August 2022, the saigonchildren’s School Building and Learning Environments team conducted a field survey to Phương Ninh primary and Secondary School, located in a remote region in Phương Bình Commune, Phụng Hiệp District, Hậu Giang Province. It was then announced as a new school building project for the first time and called for donations at the 13th Saigon Summer Ball. Eight months later, this decaying school will soon undergo a transformation.

On June 8th, the commencement ceremony for the reconstruction of new classrooms and the schoolyard took place at main site of the school. In addition to the reciprocated funds from the local government, this project will be implemented through financial support from from Corrina Lim and her friends, esteemed supporters of the Saigon Summer Ball 2022, and Capital Group‘s staff and corporate donations.

Phương Ninh school has one main site and 2 satellite sites, with a total of 12 classrooms. Around 600 students form both primary and secondary levels study there each year. The main site, which will benefit from new structural facilities, was built in the late 80s. Many teachers and students have confessed that its infrastructure has been severely damaged for years. Cracks have appeared in the walls with peeling paint, the columns have been patched up annually but continue to deteriorate, and the playground has become covered in moss, making it dangerously slippery.

Furthermore, as the school is located near a wetland natural reserve that is still very much undiscovered, students can sometimes catch fish or witness land leeches from the playground during the rainy seasons. Not to mention the seriously unsafe leaking roofs and broken gutters have resulted in flooding inside the classrooms, leading to a closure of the school for one month.

The project, which involves building three new classrooms by demolishing four old ones and renovating the 200-square-metre playground, will initiate this June and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. The construction process will follow the standards of the Ministry of Education and Training. Just a few months later, hundreds of students will undoubtedly have more motivation and interest as they can enjoy their lesson in well-equipped classrooms. The newly-built structures will also hold significant value as they meet the requirements of the new learning programme, enhancing the local educational quality.

An’s wish for “pink walls” will soon come true, as simultaneously, all primary and secondary students will study in a safer and more friendly learning environment, enabling them to access the proper educational quality they deserve and build better futures for themselves.
