Becoming a doctor had always been a dream of Thanh Nghi but it was also a challenge for her as getting admission to a medical school was well-known for its high competitiveness. Two years ago, Nghi passed the entrance exam with unsatisfactory results. Coupled with familial issues, she was under immense stress and couldn’t figure out the next step. Fortunately, her cousin stayed by her side, reassuring and encouraging her to take a new direction. That was when her fate crossed paths with Environmental Management studies.

Day by day, the academic knowledge offered at the university attracted her, motivating her to conduct more research and strive for better results. Additionally, she quickly adapted to the new learning environment by engaging in social activities and academic competitions at school. A new chapter in her university life also broadened her opportunities for personal development, including enhancing her confidence and self-expression.

Nghi shares that during her teenage years, she often became the subject of gossip due to her naturally chubby body shape. The situation reached its climax when she was ridiculed by her classmates, making her not want to attend school anymore. She felt helpless and could only hope that one day the bullying would stop. Gradually, she learnt how to distance herself from negative influences, embrace and love herself, realising that one’s appearance does not define their core values.

At the beginning of her second year, Nghi gathered all her courage to apply for the U-Go Scholarship, a program jointly organised by the international organisation U-Go and saigonchildren to support female university students facing difficulties. Initially, she didn’t feel confident, thinking there were many more deserving candidates. However, she was rightfully awarded the scholarship, which greatly motivated her to continue pursuing her dreams.

Regarding her future plans, Nghi expresses her desire to work in a field that aligns with her academic qualifications. Currently, she sets goals to get an exchange scholarship in Japan, an annual cultural exchange program fully funded by her university. Nghi has a record of participating in such activities in Vietnam, and her language skills provide an advantage. More importantly, she aims to maintain her excellent academic performance and improve her Japanese language proficiency to increase her chances of securing the scholarship next year.
