These are the words of Nguyễn Thị Trúc Lý – a university student majoring in Chemical Engineering – who has just won first prize in the competition “Become the British Consul General for a day” organised by the British Consulate-General Ho Chi Minh City (UK in Vietnam).
Trúc Lý is a student who receives a scholarship from saigonchildren, through support from the U-Go organisation. She is also an active participant in volunteer activities and skill development organised by saigonchildren, including the PowHERful Girls Summit in October last year.
By winning first place in this competition, Trúc Lý’s prize was a day to experience the work of the British Consul General, Emily Hamblin. On that day, sharing from Lý:
“In the morning, I had a tour of the British consulate and learned about the roles that the consulate takes on and about educational and environmental programs that the consulate is promoting. At noon, Ms. Emily and I went to the French consulate for lunch with other Consul Generals and other prize winners, as well as discussed what we and they can do for girls and women in Vietnam in particular and other countries in general,…”
Trúc Lý shared that she is very happy to be able to use her own story to inspire other girls.
“The environment that I was born into still has serious issues with gender bias, so pursuing a career in engineering has presented many challenges for me. After this experience, I also learned that the British Council offers scholarships for female STEM students. Therefore, I hope to become an outstanding student and receive a scholarship to achieve my long-standing dream of studying abroad.”
Saigonchildren is very pleased that the activities in the PowHERful campaign have been and continue to inspire female students like Lý on their journey to overcome gender barriers and fully develop their potential. Besides Trúc Lý, another scholarship student from saigonchildren, Huỳnh Thị Thu Trinh – who also participated in the PowHERful Girls’ Summit – won one of the three “Inspiring Ambassador” prizes and received a gift from the British Consulate General.
