A 25-year-old bike driver and his dream of earning a college degree in mechatronics engineering

Kim Long grew up in a financially struggling family in Lộc Ninh, a remote border district in Bình Phước Province. His parents earned a modest living from cow farming and black pepper cultivation, with a total household income of under 3 million VND per month. Still, they did their utmost to keep all three of their children in school.

From a young age, Long was shaped by his parents’ words: “We’ve worked this hard all our lives because we didn’t have the chance to study.” Their struggles became his motivation. He promised himself that, through education, he would change his future.

But Long’s own path to learning was far from smooth. After finishing Grade 9, he was forced to leave school when his father was diagnosed with a serious heart condition and his mother began treatment for thyroid cancer. Long dropped out and started working to support the family. When COVID-19 hit, he lost his job.

By the end of 2021, as the pandemic eased, Long made a bold move: he left for Hồ Chí Minh City, determined to return to school. He enrolled in a vocational training course at Lý Tự Trọng College, supporting himself entirely by working as a Grabbike driver. He used every bit of income to pay for tuition and living costs.

Thanks to his tireless efforts, Long graduated with distinction from the vocational programme. But he didn’t stop there. He took a bigger leap which he enrolled in the college-level programme in mechatronics engineering, determined to follow his passion.

At first, I planned to study in the evenings and on weekends, while finding a job aligned with my major during the daytime. But it wasn’t easy to get such a job that matched both my skills and my class schedule. Meanwhile, rent, living expenses, and especially tuition fees kept piling up.

I returned to Grab driving because it was the only job flexible enough to fit my class schedule. But the income was unstable. I tried to save every bit, but still couldn’t cover the tuition fees before the deadline. That worried me a lot.

At this critical moment, Long was introduced to saigonchildren’s Getting Ready for Work Programme. In October 2024, he received a scholarship covering tuition fees for his final two semesters. Beyond financial support, the programme also offered free English classes, which helped Long earn the certificate required for graduation, and soft skills workshops, equipping him with the tools and confidence to enter the workforce.

“The scholarship, valued at 10 million VND, may not seem like a large sum to many people, but for me, it was a lifeline. It helped me stay in school and lifted a huge burden from my shoulders.”

Thanks to his perseverance, Long maintained excellent academic results: earning 8s and 10s in his most recent semester. Then, in June 2025, he received the news he had been hoping for: a job offer as a technician specialising in electric vehicle repair. His starting salary is 7 million VND/month.

Long’s story mirrors that of many young people who dream big but are held back by circumstances beyond their control. hat’s why saigonchildren’s Getting Ready for Work programme exists, to provide scholarships, skill-building, and real opportunities for young people like Long to take their next step into the future.
