A day of experiencing vibrant modern life and historical imprints in HCMC

As summer arrives and school lessons pause, around 80 students of various levels currently receiving saigonchildren scholarships in Thanh An and Dầu Tiếng (formerly part of Bình Dương Province) enjoyed an eye-opening experience day in HCMC.

Bridging the future and the past

The first stop was the Long Bình Depot. For most of them, this was the first time witnessing the behind-the-scenes operations of Metro Line 1, from the large train parking area to the repair and maintenance facilities. Immediately after this fresh experience, the whole group was incredibly excited to step aboard the train, whizzing straight towards the city centre.

In the afternoon, the students continued their journey back through time at the Museum of Hồ Chí Minh City. Through engaging stories shared by the museum guides, they learned more about the city’s formation and development, admired its unique architectural features, and explored cultural heritage values preserved through artefacts and different historical periods. Through this experience, stories that once existed only in textbooks became more vivid and meaningful through their own exploration.

This trip is part of a project implemented by saigonchildren in partnership with SC Johnson this year for the Scholarship Programme, aiming to empower and bring holistic development experiences to students striving to overcome difficulties in the region.

Empowering education with 94 scholarships

Alongside this activity, during the 2025-2026 school year, the project supported and awarded 94 scholarships to students in the former Bình Dương area. This timely assistance not only helps ease the financial burden of schooling for families ahead of the new school year, but also serves as a great source of moral support, boosting the students’ confidence to persevere on their journey of conquering knowledge.

Safeguarding school health against dengue fever

In addition to nurturing their education and mental well-being, saigonchildren and SC Johnson pay special attention to the students’ physical health and a safe living environment both at school and at home.

Recognising the risks of seasonal illnesses, the project organised four workshops on dengue fever prevention, reaching out and equipping 1,219 primary and secondary school students in Phương Bình and Tân Phước Hưng communes (Cần Thơ City) with essential health protection knowledge.

Through these lively interactive sessions, the children not only understood the causes and symptoms of the disease better but also mastered environmental hygiene measures to actively protect themselves and their community.
