According to UNICEF’s Vietnam Education Fact Sheets 2022, the Mekong Delta has the highest rate of out-of-school children in the country. One of the most significant barriers to education in the region lies in the complexity and high costs of building schools. With its dense network of waterways, prolonged flooding, weak soil foundations, and uneven population distribution, school construction in the Mekong Delta is especially challenging. In response, saigonchildren has made the Mekong Delta a key focus of its School Building Programme over the past 30 years. Of the more than 450 schools that saigonchildren has built or renovated, over 50% are located in this region.

The schools built by saigonchildren not only comply with the standards set by the Ministry of Education and Training, but also prioritise key human-centred design features:

A standout example of long-term support for education in the Mekong Delta is the 10-year partnership between saigonchildren and BASF, along with its partners (Hexachem, MKVN Chemicals – a part of Azelis, Nippon Paint Vietnam, Sam Chem Sphere, and Tam Trần). Together, they have contributed to the construction and renovation of eight schools, seven of which are located in the Mekong Delta provinces of Hậu Giang, Trà Vinh, and An Giang. Thanks to careful design, construction, and oversight, the first of these projects—Tập Ngãi Kindergarten in Tiểu Cần district, Trà Vinh province—remains in good condition and in active use to this day. This enduring support has helped create better learning environments for nearly 900 children each year, planting long-lasting seeds of knowledge in a region still facing many challenges.

Damien Roberts, Executive Director of saigonchildren, shared: “In the Mekong Delta, a small bridge can transform the life of a rural village. For us, each school we build or renovate is a bridge—one that can take children into a bright and prosperous future. We’re proud to partner with BASF to give many thousands of children the schools they deserve and the passion for education which can transform their lives.”
