When a scholarship is worth more than just paying school fees

According to UNICEF (2022), the Mekong Delta has the highest rate of out-of-school children in Vietnam. This issue is driven by several barriers, including difficult family circumstances, high education costs, inadequate facilities, and a shortage of teachers and educational resources.

For more than 30 years, this has been a key area where saigonchildren has implemented its scholarship programme, supporting students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a smaller portion of support extended to students in Hồ Chí Minh City and other southern provinces.

Addressing the most basic educational expenses

At the beginning of each school year, the required fees and the costs of preparing for a new term are a constant worry for disadvantaged families. A homeroom teacher shared with us, “Many families in remote areas do farming or manual labour with unstable incomes. At the beginning of the school year, they can’t even borrow enough money to pay the fees and have to ask the school for a delay. We understand their circumstances, sometimes we don’t even dare to collect the fees, and instead ask colleagues to contribute to help them”.

Initially, our scholarships helped with basic school fees. After public schools became tuition-free, we adjusted our packages to meet more practical needs, covering essentials like health insurance, notebooks, uniforms, and bus fares. We also provide 60 kilograms of rice to each family, distributed in three batches throughout the school year, to help ease daily living expenses.

In special cases, students may receive glasses, calculators, or even laptops. Ngọc Ngân, a university student who received a laptop, shared, “I’m so happy to have been selected for the laptop support. The computer I had been using was second-hand and very outdated. For months, since it broke down, whenever I needed to do assignments, I had to use the computers in the school’s lab. Now that I have my own laptop, I can use it whenever I need to”.

Growing into a holistic support system

Financial assistance is only the first step. In today’s fast-paced world, children need more than just the right to an education; they need soft skills and supplementary knowledge to grow with confidence.

That’s why training workshops have become an important part of our scholarship programme. The topics are practical and relevant to everyday life: self-protection, online safety, mental health care, emotional regulation, time management, and career orientation. The content is regularly updated to suit each age group and their needs.

Extracurricular activities are another way for students to connect, build confidence, and develop social skills. Mid-Autumn and Lunar New Year celebrations, excursions for high-achieving students, and our annual summer camp all bring children together in a positive environment. A key part of our summer camp is the participation of former scholarship recipients who return as positive role models for the next generation.

Every year, saigonchildren also organises meetings at schools with scholarship students and their caregivers. These gatherings help our social workers listen to families, follow up on the children’s well-being, and work closely with teachers. In this way, the programme is not just financial support, but a caring network where families, schools, and the organisation come together for children’s growth.

Transparency and sustainable support

Every 2-3 years, saigonchildren’s social workers visit students’ homes to reassess their circumstances and make any necessary adjustments. This ensures that support always goes where it is most needed.

Before each school year begins, we publish a detailed report reflecting the impact of the scholarship programme. In addition, regular newsletters keep our supporters updated on activities and stories, creating a consistent flow of transparent information.

When a child joins the programme, they are guaranteed support at least until they complete their current level of education and often longer, if they wish to continue their studies. The scholarship programme is sustained thanks to the commitment of individuals, businesses, and partner organisations. This collaboration ensures stability and long-term impact, so that children today and in the future have the opportunity to continue their education and achieve holistic growth.
