Duc Loi’s story: An opportunity that changed a life

date_range2026-06-17

Recently, saigonchildren had the chance to reconnect with several remarkable alumni whose stories seem almost too remarkable to be true, yet are among the many we have been fortunate to witness throughout more than 30 years of creating educational opportunities. One of them is Lợi.

Memories of “the most dilapidated house in the neighbourhood”

Born and raised in a disadvantaged rural area of Tây Ninh province, Đức Lợi’s childhood was shaped by the days his parents spent working as hired labourers in distant custard apple orchards, sometimes only returning home to visit their children once a week. The family’s house was once known among neighbours as “the most run-down house in the neighbourhood”, a description Lợi still remembers today.

Four children grew up under that roof, with Lợi being the youngest, and all of them possessed an extraordinary passion for learning. Their parents worked tirelessly with one simple belief: that education was the only path that could help their children build a better future. Taking turns handling household chores and guiding one another through their studies, Lợi and his siblings grew up on a foundation of resilience and love.

A turning point from timely support

As Lợi’s older sisters consecutively entered university, his parents’ immense pride was accompanied by the crushing anxiety of funding their education. Despite their best efforts, their physical strength was depleting with age while the financial burden grew heavier by the day.

Reflecting on that time, Lợi shared:

“It was in Year 8 that I came to know about and was accepted into the saigonchildren’s Scholarship Programme. In those desperate days, the scholarship package provided by the organisation made me realise that there were still so many good people in society ready to support me. It gave me an incredible amount of motivation and let me know that I was not alone.”

Far from being just a one-off support package, our Scholarship Programme walked alongside Lợi all the way from secondary school until his university graduation. Receiving assistance with tuition fees, notebooks, textbooks, rice, and other essential supplies provided a solid financial and emotional foundation. This allowed him to focus peacefully on his classes without the constant, lingering fear of having to drop out halfway.

The sweet fruits of perseverance

In 2017, Lợi officially graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Bách Khoa University, VNU-HCMC, one of the most prestigious universities in southern Vietnam.

The journey from “the most run-down house in the neighbourhood” to earning an engineering degree from a top university was a long road paved with sweat and tears of happiness. Eight years after graduation, Lợi has become a successful young professional. He is now able to support his family and has built a comfortable, proper home for his parents.

Yet, for Lợi, this journey did not simply stop at his own personal success.

Every year, he regularly returns to saigonchildren to meet the wider scholarship recipient community, sharing his story of overcoming adversity with younger pupils and students currently receiving support. His past experiences have given him a profound understanding of the value of timely companionship and encouragement.

Because more than anyone, he understands that an opportunity given at the right time can change the course of a life.
