Trần Ái Khanh: “I feel lucky because there are still people who care about me”

Khanh is a student, supported by Saigon Children’s Charity’s Getting Ready For Work Programme, studying Hairdressing.

Her dad became paralysed after a work accident, and her mum left them after this incident. Since then, Khanh and her father have moved into a relative’s house, which is a charitable house built by the local governor at Tan Quy Tay commune, Binh Chanh district.

In 6th grade, Khanh had to quit school and start vocational training at Tran Dai Nghia Intermediate School. Thanks to Ms Kim Nga, a teacher at this school, she was introduced to saigonchildren’s Getting Ready For Work Programme and was supported with tuition, learning equipment fees, travel expenses, and most importantly, ardent encouragements and consultations from both Ms Phat and Ms Nguyet.

Khanh’s house is far away from school and is located in a rural area of Binh Chanh district. To take the closest bus to school, she has to first travel a few kilometres on foot from her house. At the start, we were quite worried about this obstacle; but Khanh overcame the challenge and went to school consistently, always on time.

Khanh shared: At the beginning, I lacked confidence because I could not follow the class – it made me feel so bad about myself and my family’s circumstances. Those negative thoughts led to my decision to quit school at one point’.

When saigonchildren found out about Khanh’s problem, our staff visited her house to help her solve the issues and motivate her to go back to school. Also, we contacted Khanh’s teacher to discuss her situation, to encourage her to continue and complete the course in the best way she can.

Khanh Get Ready For Work

Khanh confided: ‘After the discussion between saigonchildren’s staff and the teacher at my school, I got extra learning support after class. Also, since joining the life skill course at saigonchildren, I’ve become more hopeful, feel less doubtful of my ability, and became more motivated in my studies’.

After that, the pandemic came and social distancing orders were issued; Khanh lost her job as a hired labourer at a shop, and being the only breadwinner in the family, her family met a lot of financial challenges during this time. Saigon Children’s Charity has supported her with rice and food to help alleviate Khanh of some of her financial pressures.

Not only a studious and hardworking person, but Khanh is also empathetic towards those in similar situations as her. She volunteered to go on a trip to Thien Binh Orphanage in Dong Nai, where she met other people living in disadvantaged circumstances. After the trip, Khanh realised that she is still luckier than a lot of people. Despite losing her mother and facing many life challenges, Khanh still feels very lucky because she still has her loved ones beside her motivating her. This in turn motivates her to work harder, acquire a better job, change her life, and make her family and teachers proud.

Khanh has completed her hairdressing course with good results. Ms. Kim Nga – her teacher – decided to keep her at school for a longer period of time to help further develop her skills. Now, Khanh has begun her journey in finding the first full-time job of her life.
