Raising funds to provide education to disadvantaged children
On Saturday, March 12th, the 2011 Saigon Cyclo Challenge: Cyclo Challenge Version 2.0 was organised and held at The Crescent (Phu My Hung, District 7) by Saigon Children’s Charity (SCC). The aim of the event was to raise money in order to be able to offer educational and vocational training to children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding provinces. The 11th Annual Cyclo Challenge was a huge success thanks to the support of the Gold sponsors: HSBC, Megastar, Adidas, VinaLiving, Hoang Long Hoan Vu JOCs, Crown, JardinesGroup, Baker & McKenzie, and SCC’s Platinum sponsor and event partner – VNG. All nine sponsor companies participated in the racing, and the winners of the Cyclo Challenge Grand Trophy competition were HSBC (first prize), VNG Zing (second prize), and Megastar (third prize).
Up to this point, the 2011 Cyclo Challenge has raised more than US$36,000 in total. Saigon Children’s Charity will use this fund to take simple, practical steps to ensure that the children most in need have access to an education. The money will be used to maintain and develop SCC’s key activities which include building schools, vocational training, school scholarships, and supporting the development of small local organisations working with children with a disability.SCC has been working in Vietnam for nearly 20 years, and over the last ten years SCC has supported more than 40,000 children in accessing and sustaining an education. Our education programmes include not just mainstream studies but also vocational training programmes such as what we offer at Thang Long Vocational School and through our Saigon Hospitality programme. Disadvantaged children benefit from these high quality programmes because they do not need to pay tuition fees and, because the content is specifically tailored to meet current labour market requirements, their chances are very high of finding well-paid employment. This then helps them to earn a decent living which will support them and their families and, we hope, achieve the ultimate goal of SCC which is to lift these children and their families out of poverty forever.
