Can, Hau, Thao, An and Duyen were disadvantaged youths who received vocational training from saigonchildren and can now pursue a career goal and give back to the community. The team performed hair-cutting and styling, manicures, and pedicures to 24 elderly at the Kien Giang Elderly Assistance Centre and almost 100 orphans at the Phat Quang Charity Centre. They also provided many donations, including 15 boxes of instant noodles, 24 boxes of Salonpas patches, 24 bottles of medicated oil, four bottles of cooking oil, and two boxes of milk, as well as school supplies and toys.

During their course of study, the students were not only instructed on their skills but also counselled in their career paths. The meaningful advice was shared among the children of Phat Quang Centre as the team’s expertise and professionalism aspired them. Some even stepped forward in the hope of being part of the programme in the future. “Miss, please give me your phone number, so I can call you two years later when I’m of age to attend the course,” one asked a saigonchildren staff.

Perhaps, the success of the volunteer trip relied not on how the students’ newly-acquired skills were refined, but how they spread the warmth and inspiration among the underprivileged elderly and children in Kien Giang Province.
