Increasing online access to benefit students from low-income communities

Rapid technological advancements demand students to expand their computer literacy and stay informed on practising safe online behaviours so that they won’t be left behind in the current digital world. However, the lack of both material and human resources in the IT field is an issue of great pressure on schools and local authorities in many remote regions, such as Trà Vinh – where saigonchildren have supported educational projects for over 15 years.

Due to this reality, on the 10th of February, an Opening Ceremony for an IT classroom was held in Tân Hòa B Primary School (Trà Vinh Province), which delighted the teachers, staff, and 252 students from economically challenging backgrounds. This project resulted from a partnership of many months between saigonchildren and Fujifilm Business Innovation Vietnam, along with support from The Education and Training Bureau of Tiểu Cần District.

Tân Hòa B Primary School has been one of our “School Building and Learning Environments” projects since 2015. After 8 years of operation, the school still lacks computers for teaching and an adequate intranet system for day-to-day functioning. Through this project, The Education and Training Bureau of Tiểu Cần District supported renovations and furniture suitable for an IT classroom, whilst Fujifilm sponsored 15 sets of brand-new desktop computers and an updated intranet system valued over $US8,500.

Stepping into the IT room for the first time, the students were unable to conceal their looks of surprise and excitement upon seeing the upgraded equipment – pressing the brand-new keyboards and shuffling the mouse around wholeheartedly, as instructed by the team from Fujifilm. During the Opening ceremony, the donor team also organised icebreaker activities for attendees to interact, take photos, and receive gifts from Fujifilm.

The educational environment at Tân Hòa B school has massively improved thanks to the availability of an IT classroom. The internet that is now widely accessible for students will provide them with opportunities to sharpen their IT skills and broaden their knowledge – better preparing them for the digital workplaces of the future.
