Aiming to support people from low-income backgrounds in recovering their economic situations from Covid-19 outbreaks, enabling them to continue sending their children to school, the livelihood support, which is part of “We Are In This Together” project, funded by Prudential Vietnam and coordinated by saigonchildren, has implemented in three communes: Bắc Ruộng, Măng Tố, and Nghị Đức, located in Tánh Linh district, Bình Thuận province since March 2023.
In Phase 1, ten households received support in the form of breeding sows, sanitation for animal pens, disease prevention vaccines, and guidance on animal husbandry techniques. As reported on 10th October, the breeding programme achieved a 100% success rate in sow breeding, a 95% success rate in pregnancies, and 40% of the sows had given birth to piglets.
Additionally, 70 households were provided with a non-interest-bearing loan in kind for five months, with a maximum value of 5 million VND per household, to invest in agricultural production and livestock farming. After five months, all 70 households repaid their loans on time, achieving a 100% repayment rate. The interest-free loan initiative eliminated the need for households to pay additional interest, allowing them to invest the funds directly into agricultural production.
In Phase 2, this component of the project will collect piglets in the agreed-upon quantity from the initially supported households to further expand the sow breeding model for new households in need within the local community. Simultaneously, in terms of material support, the project will continue to disburse funds in Phase 2 to an additional 70 disadvantaged households requiring loans for production purposes.
On 28th October, over 100 beneficiaries along with the local authorities, project stakeholders participated the concluding event of “We Are In This Together” project. Many households had the opportunity to discuss the efficiency of the project, share their challenges in implementing the breeding program, and propose their wishes for continuous support in the near future.
Previously, the nutritional support component for disadvantaged children in Trà Vinh province took place over three months. Focusing on improving nutrition for young children, this phase provided 64,900 mid-morning snacks to 1,180 students in the Tiểu Cần district over 55 days, from March to the end of the 2022-2023 school year.
