On 16th July 2024, the opening ceremony of the initiative “Empowering children in the Protection of mental health” took place at the Department of Education and Training of Tiểu Cần District, Trà Vinh Province with the presence of local authorities and representatives of stakeholders. Coordinated by Saigon Children’s Charity (saigonchildren) and funded by the German Consulate General in Hồ Chí Minh City, 500 teachers and over 1,600 secondary school students are expected to benefit directly from the project.
At the opening ceremony, Mr. Christopher Scholl, Deputy Consul General at the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, shared: “It is a great honour to be here today at the launch of our project “Empowering children in the protection of mental health” and to open another chapter in the cooperation between Vietnam and Germany with you. Education and Training are important pillars of our bilateral relations. Germany is very active in many areas of education in Vietnam. We want to empower the next generations to be resilient, to face and to overcome obstacles in order to achieve their goals.”
Having supported Trà Vinh Province for over 15 years, saigonchildren is committed to continuing its efforts to improve local education quality.
This project marks a significant milestone in saigonchildren’s 17-year journey of removing barriers to education for underprivileged children in Trà Vinh, besides core programmes: awarding scholarships, building schools, and enhancing learning environments, all fostering quality education in the region.
The project is expected to perpetuate the positive impact of the collaborative relationship by broadening the prevalence of essential knowledge within schools, supporting teenagers, especially female students, in raising awareness about mental health and gender-related health factors, as well as promoting healthy life habits for overall well-being enhancement.
The project will be implemented from July 2024 to March 2025, divided into two main parts
In the first phase, 500 teachers will receive training on mental health, enabling them to recognise common symptoms in people experiencing mental health issues, especially among adolescents. In addition, they will develop effective communication skills, emotional regulation techniques for conversations with students, support them in resolving conflicts in school and develop their own values.
In the second phase, 1,680 students from secondary schools in Tiểu Cần District will participate in sharing sessions to gain a basic understanding of mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and apply that knowledge into practice. Comprehensive and timely sex education will allow students, particularly girls, to reduce the likelihood of experiencing and coping with threats of sexual abuse and violence, other mental health, sexual and reproductive health issues, thus maintaining balanced psychological and overall health.
Following the training and sharing sessions, the saigonchildren’s social workers will continue to monitor beneficiary teachers and students to support the practical application of the acquired knowledge until March 2025.
