On May 10th, saigonchildren opened Tan Phuoc Hung Kindergarten in Phung Hiep District, Hau Giang Province. The team was joined by donors from Hong Kong as well as donors from the Jardine Matheson Group in Vietnam including Pizza Hut, Gammon, Guardian, Schindler and, representatives from the local authorities, teachers and 35 students with their families.

Saigonchildren used international business community donations collected in Hong Kong to construct a new kindergarten which opened exactly one year after the fundraising event. The beautiful new kindergarten replaces a single classroom which had been borrowed from an elementary school. The old kindergarten room was poorly built with an unstable structure, a dilapidated interior, and was unsafe for students during the hurricane season and uncomfortable during hot days.

After four months of construction work, on 10th May, Tan Phuoc Hung Kindergarten (Thanh Vien satellite site) celebrated its Opening Ceremony with a new, safe and friendly learning environment. The new building and its two classrooms immediately benefits around 50 children in the local community, and will serve hundreds of children in the years ahead. This wonderful learning environment not only facilitates good results in both teaching and learning, it will also create meaningful childhood memories to keep students motivated and passionate about learning throughout their lives.

The new school for the Tan Phuoc Hung Kindergarten (Thanh Vien site) includes two classrooms of 86m2 each, hygiene facilities, a playground of 200m2, a school gate and a hedge. All design and construction of the new kindergarten complies with the standards for school buildings set by the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam.

All saigonchildren construction projects include a one-year warranty after construction completion and a programme of workshops about school maintenance to raise awareness among the teachers and children on the importance of school hygiene and maintenance.

Saigonchildren again thanks all donors, particularly the Jardine Matheson Group and members of the international business community in Hong Kong and who made this project possible.

The success of the project was made possible by effective cooperation with the local authorities, including the People’s Committee of Hau Giang province who supported saigonchildren, ensuring the project was delivered on schedule and to the necessary high standard.

Saigonchildren’s school building program has been active for over 20 years and has provided over 186 schools with 480 classrooms.
