On Sunday 28th June, Standard Chartered partnered with saigonchildren to organise a training session on financial literacy and management for post-high-school students and alumni from our scholarship programme. The session was held in conjunction with the student meeting and graduation ceremony, serving as a gift from saigonchildren and Standard Chartered to our students as they prepare themselves for an independent future.
More than 100 students and alumni joined the workshop, which was run by staff and volunteers from Standard Chartered. Divided into 12 groups, the graduates learned basic financial terms, and some common misconceptions in finance. The 12 teams then competed in a quiz to test their understanding of the new knowledge, and the three winning teams were rewarded with fun gifts from Standard Chartered.

The session then moved on to providing essential information on money management, investment, and entrepreneurship. The knowledge provided was not only highly relevant in todays’ climate but exciting. The 12 teams then got to utilise what they had learned in a practical exercise and competed to see which team could make the best financial decisions, be it trading, buying properties, or investing in different markets. The students and alumni said that they thoroughly enjoyed this activity and learned a lot of valuable knowledge that will help them in their future.

Many of the students joining this workshop moved away from their families in rural areas and are now living on their own for the first time to attend colleges or universities. This workshop gave them the essential tools needed to manage their spending habits, gaining long-term perspective on their personal finance, and most importantly, identify and avoid fraudulent investments. At a time where predatory financial scam is on the rise, mainly targeting vulnerable young adults from rural areas, the knowledge and skills provided in the workshop serve as necessary self-preservation to enable these students to protect themselves, their families, and their hard work.
On behalf of all of our students, we would like to give a big thank you to Standard Chartered on their wonderful project. We hope that the programme will in the future reach even more students, in order to further spread the message of the importance of financial literacy within the community of disadvantaged people, who need it most.
