G.B. was born with autism. He will be turning 6 this year, yet he has no grasp of basic language and communication. He cannot form sentences or concentrate on tasks. He is often confused and doesn’t know how to show affection like other children. Even though he loves his mother, he can only express himself through yelling or pinching her. G.B. is also unable to take care of personal hygiene.
On top of this, G.B. was born to a very poor family. His parents declared their separation not long after he was born, so his mother had to raise him on her own. They are now living with his grandmother and his uncle, who is mentally ill and has to be taken care of. All four of them live in a small attic.
Autism, if dealt with early through special education, is not a problem to a child’s development. However, as G.B. did not have that kind of support, he now lacks the ability to communicate and interact with others. His mother had to stop working to stay home and take care of him. No mainstream school would accept G.B., but his family do not have enough money to enroll him into a school for children with special educational needs.
For autistic children, not getting the right intervention and suitable guidance in the first few years of their lives, will have a major imapact on their chance at life. If they haven’t formed the ability to communicate, control their emotions, concentrate or express their feelings, they cannot go to school and work like others.
