“Helping children become better people makes me feel content”

Ánh Ngọc was born into a family with three sisters, living in a financially struggling household. As her parents get older and suffer from significant health issues, that doesn’t stop them from working to feed their daughters. Her dad works as a construction labourer, while her mum runs a small vegetable stall in the market. In addition, they work on their neighbour’s paddocks to cultivate livestock feed and earn extra income.

Ngọc probably inherited the hard-working trait from her parents. When she was in high school, she once worked as a temporary waitress at a coffee shop. When attending university in Ho Chi Minh City, even with saigonchildren’s scholarship, she still considers finding a part-time job to support her living costs.

However, this does not mean Ngọc neglects her studies. She performed well in the 12th grade, passed the entrance exam, and is now a freshman at the Faculty of Preschool Education at HCMC University of Pedagogy. Not only Ngọc, but her two sisters have also been admitted to universities in HCMC. They are each beginning a new chapter in their academic careers.

At first, her career choice did not receive encouragement, as her family heard childcare is extremely hard work and kindergarten teachers are under a lot of scrutiny from parents. However, after conducting research on this major and considering various aspects such as career opportunities, compatibility with her family’s financial situation, and her passion for working with children, Ngọc made the decision to pursue this path. Moreover, thanks to her good academic results and enthusiasm in extracurricular activities at school, she gained much more support from her loved ones.

Regarding her career plans, Ngọc expresses that she would like to start as a kindergarten teacher in Ho Chi Minh City to gain proper teaching experience after graduation. After that, she may then move back to her hometown and continue her meaningful work. “I see that preschool education is suitable to my personality and abilities. Many kids in my hometown cannot afford to go to kindergarten, so I want to open a nursery class where they can learn and develop themselves there.”
