Cuong’s Story: The Journey to University

date_range2022-12-30

“Saigonchildren’s 30th anniversary also coincided with my 30th birthday. I am very grateful to saigonchildren, when the meaningful activities that the organization is carrying out have helped many children [with difficulties like me].”

Tran Quoc Cuong was a student in the Child Development Scholarship Program (CDSP) and received a scholarship from saigonchildren from grade 5 to university. Cuong graduated from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and is currently working as a 2D digital illustrator (digital painting) for games.

“It was very difficult for my family at that time…”

Having lost his father after many years of difficult health problems, his mother was the only one to raise her three children to go to school. There was also a time when Cuong thought about leaving school to earn money and ease the financial burden on his family. However, it was fortunate that did not happen and he continued to attend school. When he was in high school, Cuong worked as a hired laborer to harvest rubber latex on weekends; until college, he was accepted to work as a waitress at a cafe where the money earnt went towards school and to cover other expenses.

Looking back at himself, Cuong feels proud of not giving up. “Sometimes I think about how lucky I am, if I didn’t continue to go to school, I can’t imagine what I would be like now. University is like opening a new chapter in life, going to many places and learning many things. The most important thing is to be exposed to digital painting to have the current job like now”.

Efforts will pay off

Cuong always said that he must always strive to spread this passion for art to more people.

In university, Cuong majored in Hotel and Restaurant Management. After graduating, he chose to study some short courses on digital painting to relax and relieve stress. It took about 3 years (including 1 year in the tourism industry and 2 years in customer service) for him to seriously think about a new direction for his career, stemming from a childhood hobby – painting.

Currently, Cuong feels extremely satisfied with this job. Although sometimes there was a lot of pressure in the process of forming and implementing the idea of the work, above all, the artist was able to do the job according to his hobby, with a stable income and to be creative in his own way. Cuong has participated in a number of painting competitions and also won a number of awards. This can be seen as a small achievement representing Cuong’s constant efforts.

Besides work, the daily joy in his life is also the cats he adopts. With that endless love, cats have also entered the vivid drawings that Cuong has done, and are incorporated into the author’s signature on each work. Cuong also shared that in the next few years, he hopes to be able to fulfill his dream of returning home, raising cats and continuing his painting work.

Saigonchildren and Cuong – Journey together

The coincidental meeting between Cuong and saigonchildren happened nearly 20 years ago, when saigonchildren came to a primary school in Tay Ninh province to survey the family situation of disadvantaged students. After that, not only did he receive scholarships, Cuong was also supported with bicycle twice. When it came to college, the scholarship also helped to pay for the large part of his tuition.

“I have many memories with saigonchildren, such as campsites and skills classes. What I remember most is that when I got to university, I was worried because I didn’t have money to study. So when I was informed that I would continue to receive a scholarship to continue my studies, I was so happy to the point that I couldn’t sleep.”

When he was a student, Cuong once had the opportunity to accompany the social workers of saigonchildren to Cu Chi district to survey and give gifts to disadvantaged students there. “It was a memorable experience. I realise that everyone has their own circumstances, and they have worked hard and tried a lot to be able to study.”

As a member of the Alumni Association, there is still a connection between saigonchildren and Cuong. In 2022, Cuong actively contacted and offered to support in terms of design for a number of items and illustrative video clips for fundraising campaigns during the year. Most recently, it is Cuong who “breathes” the colorful and inspirational paintings on the 2023 desktop calendar exclusively for saigonchildren. “Now that I have more time, I want to contribute a bit as a thank you to saigonchildren for supporting me during the past time.”

Above are the designs that Cuong created for saigonchildren merchandise bandanas, using drawings by children at our Thang Long school’s art class. You can support saigonchildren’s work to enable more dreams like Cuong’s by buying the bandanas here: https://saigonchildren.com/shop/
