One bustling September morning, saigonchildren took a surprise business trip to Can Gio – an area on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City. Nguyen Thi My Linh, a scholarship recipient of saigonchildren for the past 20 years currently lives near the city, our Communications team could not pass up the opportunity to reunite with her.
Currently, Linh enjoys a life filled with fulfilling moments in her work and with her loving small family.
Touched to see each other again, Linh reminisced about the moment she first heard of saigonchildren. “Honestly it happened so long ago, I can’t remember the exact details. I just remember I was in grade 6 that year, my family was seriously struggling, and suddenly I got a notice from the Committee that I had received a scholarship.”
Can Gio in the 90s was a rich land blessed by nature, with the Sac Forest and vast vegetation – but many still lived lives filled with hardship. The transportation system connecting roads was underdeveloped at the time, and in some places, kerosene lamps were still used to light up houses and neighbourhoods. Although she did not mention it, we could imagine the difficulties Linh and her peers experienced in accessing education during that time.
She further opened up about her childhood: “I had not lived with my dad since I was a child. Our mother was the only one who raised me and my older sister, who had to leave school early so that I could go to school. At the time, I saw how hard life was for the two women in my life, but I was still young – my only hope was to study hard so I could later find a job and support my family. During that time, I did not think of anything other than school”.
“The scholarship I received from saigonchildren was around 700,000 to 1 million VND. Without the help from saigonchildren, my family still would have tried their hardest to ensure I continued my education – but it would have been much more burdensome. Considering this was a few decades ago, coupled with such difficult family circumstances, this was a huge sum of money to support us financially, as well as spiritually. It helped my family a lot in our daily lives, and in affording my education, so I am extremely grateful, from which also motivated me to study harder.”
With a strong will to overcome obstacles throughout all those years, Linh has finally reaped her rewards: for nearly 15 years, she has been working as a preschool teacher at a local school; her home is nurtured by the laughter and cries of her 2 young children; and what’s more is she was able to fulfil her childhood dream, to live and care for her mother. With a stable job and a happy family, Linh seems to be extremely satisfied with her life.
“As the years have passed, I myself have changed a lot. But there’s one thing I will never regret: not giving up on my education. Come to think of it, if I had given up on my studies, perhaps life would be very different now. No matter what, I remained determined to study to change my life.”
