Born in the highlands of Vietnam, Nguyệt Ánh, still a baby, migrated to Hồ Chí Minh City with her mom, embracing the hope of building a better life for both. Her mother faced many hardships, working tirelessly to provide a roof over their heads and food on the table.
Ánh spent her teenage years in District 4, a tough part of the city with numerous labourers residing. One day, her mom came home and told her about Thăng Long School, where Saigon Children offered free English classes for disadvantaged youth. Ánh was thrilled to join the class as it was exactly what she wanted – a chance to learn English and practise with teachers, friends, and, most importantly, foreigners. Since then, not only did her English improve, but so did her self-confidence.
Ánh excelled during high school, but the cost of university made it impossible for her to continue her studies, as her family still faced financial struggles. Through an introduction from saigonchildren, she got her first job in a top-tier hotel kitchen, then made her way to the front desk clerk position at a long-established company. After saving some money that could afford university fees at the beginning stage, she then studied hard and got admitted to the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City.
Ánh graduated, held a competent position at Premier Oil Vietnam, and worked there for 13 years. Subsequently, she pursued a master’s degree in Strategic Sustainable Business at Stirling University. Returning to Vietnam, she embarked on a new journey at Harbour Energy as an ESG Analyst. Now, she assumes her career at KPMG Vietnam, playing the role of Impact & ESG Services Manager.
With a successful career at the moment, Ánh has provided a more satisfactory and fulfilling life for herself and her mom, as she could buy a small lovely house for her mom to call her own. Ánh also adds that new challenges and professional milestones are in store for her, so she can’t stand still but strives forward constantly to conquer her dreams and passion.
Recently, Saigonchildren had a chance to meet Ánh again, collaborating with her at some special occasions. For 2 years, Ánh appeared at our annual fundraising enchanting Saigon Summer Ball as co-host, and just last October, becoming a crucial part as one of panel moderators of PowHERful Vietnam Girls’ Summit. We truly thank Ánh for always keeping a place for love and memories with Saigonchildren in her heart, and always being ready to come back and support us in our meaningful projects and programs from then till now.
