For many disadvantaged children and young adults, Thăng Long English and Vocational Training School is the place where they come to learn and make dreams come true. Thùy An – a former student of the drawing and English class at this school, is one of them.
At very young age, she showed a great passion for drawing and any art related topics. She would spend hours drawing by herself after school at home.
Life took a completely new turn when her parents decided to get a divorce. Her mother took her to Ho Chi Minh City and hoped for a better life here. They lived with a relative though adapting to their new life in the big city was not easy. When Thùy An was in 9th grade, her mother found out about Thăng Long school and signed her up for the drawing and English class in the evenings. The drawing class was all this young girl had ever wished for. It gave her the opportunity to develop her painting skills and reach her full potential in art.
It was sheer hard work and determination that helped Thùy An to get into Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture – a dream school for many. She is now a fourth-year student with major in graphic design and is the pride of the whole family.
Thùy An is helping students at the entrance examination to HCMC University of Architecture in 2016.

To pay for her studies and improve her professional skills she has been working part time in design companies, as well as working freelance on other projects. Not having to worry about her tuition means she can focus on achieving her goals.

Despite her busy schedule with school and work, Thùy An has still managed to devote her time to volunteer with saigonchildren over the past 2 years. She has been a great helper with designing material on different campaigns such as designing the new year calendar and greeting cards for our fundraising campaign, photobook designs for ANZ and saigonchildren’s Project 3E, and has participated as a photographer at Saigon Summer Ball. It is truly remarkable how she is able to go to school and volunteer at saigonchildren while working to support herself.
Thùy An shows a great example of how dreams do come true through hard work and determination. Her art portfolio can be viewed on Behance and Dribble for those who are interested.
