Understanding behaviour – Towards greater understanding

date_range2026-03-30

Every behaviour a child shows has meaning. But it is not always easy for adults to understand.

As part of Autism Awareness Month 2026, saigonchildren invites the community to explore and better understand the behaviours of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) through both scientific perspectives and practical insights drawn from years of experience working alongside children and their families.

Why did we choose the theme “Understanding Behaviour”?

We believe that for a child to thrive, it is not only professional support that matters, but also the understanding and support of those around them.

Over more than 10 years of working with children with ASD, we have not only provided direct support to children and their families, but also worked to build a more understanding and inclusive community for children with neurodiversity.

However, in reality, one of the biggest challenges is this: Children with ASD may not always be able to express themselves through words. This can leave parents feeling unsure, teachers finding it difficult to interact effectively, and communities sometimes misunderstanding or labelling children as “disruptive” or “stubborn”.

From a professional perspective, we see that: :bulb: Behaviour is a form of communication. Every action whether it is avoidance, repetition, or a strong reaction can be a way for a child to adapt to their environment, seek a sense of safety, or express a need.

That is why this year, we have chosen the theme “Understanding Behaviour” to begin with a simple yet important question: “Why does a child behave this way?”. Through greater understanding, we can begin to adjust how we respond and support children in ways that are more appropriate and meaningful.
