After continuous efforts in refurbishment, four kindergartens in Yên Sơn District, Tuyên Quang Province, Phúc Ninh (Cầu Giát site), Hùng Lợi (Chương Hamlet site), Lực Hành, and Xuân Vân, are now back in operation, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for 251 children.
The classrooms, once filled with broken and malfunctioning facilities, are now a thing of the past. Warm meals, peaceful naps under soft blankets, and joyful laughter have returned, marking a fresh start filled with hope after the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi.
In September 2024, Typhoon Yagi struck northern Vietnam, bringing floods, landslides, and significant human and material losses. Over 2,000 people were reported dead or missing, and dozens of schools suffered severe damage. In Yên Sơn District, home to 22 ethnic groups, 52% of whom belong to ethnic minorities, 39 educational institutions sustained major destruction, highlighting the urgent need for rebuilding efforts.
In response to this emergency, saigonchildren launched a support programme for typhoon-affected schools, providing essential educational and kitchen equipment to Phúc Ninh Preschool (Cầu Giát site) and Hùng Lợi Preschool (Chương Hamlet site) in October 2024.
Thanks to additional support from individuals and organisations, saigonchildren was also able to refurbish a third school, Xuân Vân Kindergarten. The fourth school, Lực Hành, was equipped with brand-new desks, chairs, bedsheets, pillows, industrial cookers, shelves, and other necessities, thanks to funding from EZLand Vietnam. This support was delivered just in time for Lunar New Year, allowing the schools to welcome the new year in a fully restored environment.
This initiative is part of saigonchildren’s School Building Programme. For over 30 years, this programme has constructed and renovated more than 230 schools and 600 classrooms across Vietnam, creating brighter futures for over 20,000 children every year.
