Nguyễn Cẩm Tiên (2003) is a scholarship recipient of Saigon Children’s Charity since the end of 2019. Currently, Tien and her mother live in a rental house in Cu Chi. Tien is studying in 12th grade Social 6 (under Department C which specialised in: Literature / History / Geography) and dreams of pursuing a major in Psychology at Thu Dau 1 University, Binh Duong after graduating from high school.
Tien shared: ‘My biggest motivator in pursuing a major in Psychology is: when I was a child, I lacked confidence in my appearance, academics, and dealing with family struggles. These struggles still weigh heavily on my heart because I haven’t found a solution for them. I hope that being exposed to this major will help me solve my long-standing concerns’.
To be able to pursue this major, Tien knows that she will face a multitude of difficulties from her family’s deterrence, lack of knowledge about a psychology major from those around her, and like other students with disadvantaged circumstances, Tien worries about tuition fees and career opportunities after graduation.
In spite of these difficulties, Tien remains determined to pursue her dreams. Because Tien wants to spend more time with her mom during her time at university, she decided to study at Binh Duong province, rather than pursue more renowned universities in Saigon.
Tien is a devoted daughter. When she received the scholarship from Saigon Children’s Charity, after paying her tuition fees, she brought the remaining amount back home to help her mom with extra class tuitions or living expenses. Because Tien knows that her mother is getting older and her salary of 8 million/month from tailoring will not be able to afford all the family expenses, she always tries her best to save as much money as possible.
Tien shared: ‘Education is increasingly important in the labour market, now a high school diploma or a university degree is not enough, I will need to keep improving and developing into my best self .’
Cam Tien’s path to becoming a Psychology Lecturer will require a lot of perseverance, but we believe that with her love for her mother and passion for her chosen profession, Tien will achieve all her goals in the future.
