The story of Vu Linh and her determination to start up a bakery

There was a time in my life where I had no objective, no orientation, and I was full of boredom…

Since I was in high school, I asked my parents to let me join vocational courses to learn baking techniques, but I was not allowed. My parents preferred that I complete high school first, then we could talk about the baking course later. However, they divorced when I finished high school, and my life has become very difficult since. I needed to work to earn money for my brother and me. I thought my dream to become a baker was over.

Luckily, I learned about the baking course by saigonchildren, which sponsors students who are living under difficult circumstances. I registered and was accepted to the course. During my studies, I faced great financial hardships. Every day I delivered yogurt to make money, and at night I would go to class. Sometimes, I feel too tired to attend class, but baking interests me a lot because I can apply my creativity in the cakes and bread I make. So, despite being tired, I never missed any lessons.

The more I learn how to bake, the more I love this job. I know I need to practice a lot to improve my skills. When I completed the course, I borrowed 40 mil VND from my friends and relatives to buy baking tools and materials. I know working for a famous bakery will help me have a stable salary, but at those places I will only specialize in one thing. My dream is to be able to improve all my techniques, so that’s why I wanted to start my own bakery.

My bakery is still small, as is the capital. I have met many difficulties in running my own business and growing my customer base. During all this time, saigonchildren continues to support me, and they suggested a course on how to manage my own business of IECD organization. After this course, I became better prepared to run my bakery.

Challenges are still there, but I believe in my dream and I will continue to try my hardest. I know I will be successful if I do not give up.

Compared to my friends, I feel so lucky to have a chance to join the saigonchildren vocational training courses and find a path for my life, to live with my passion, and to bring a brighter future to my family and myself.
